Indian Institute of Astrophysics hosted its annual Open Day in celebration of National Science Day on 21-Feb-2026 at its Bengaluru campus, bringing together scientists, students, educators, astro-entrepreneurs, and the general public under one roof.
For the second time this year, Bangalore Astronomy Club (BAC) had the privilege of representing our club at this prestigious institute of India. As part of the Astro-Entrepreneur segment, kiosks were provided to outreach organizations like ours, enabling direct interaction with hundreds of visitors throughout the day.
A Platform of Science, Curiosity, and Innovation
The Open Day was a vibrant confluence of:
- Engaging scientific talks by distinguished researchers
- Interactive Q&A sessions with IIA scientists
- Live demonstrations and experiments
- Exposure to advanced telescopes and instrumentation
- Meaningful conversations with young, curious minds
The event created a rare ecosystem where scientific research, public outreach, and astro-entrepreneurship intersected seamlessly.
Volunteer Reflections – Learning Beyond Representation
Perspective 1: Bridging Science and Entrepreneurship
One of our volunteers shared that participating as a member of the Astro-Entrepreneur group at IIA Open Day 2026 was truly inspiring.
The environment was filled with curiosity and innovation. Engaging with scientists, students, and space enthusiasts offered deep insights into how passion for astronomy can evolve into meaningful outreach and entrepreneurial initiatives.
A particularly powerful experience was interacting with young minds. Many of the questions posed by students were so thoughtful that they challenged our own understanding and pushed us to learn more. The Q&A sessions conducted by IIA scientists clarified long-standing myths and questions—even those carried since childhood.
The volunteer described the platform as a “different level of knowledge-sharing experience,” reinforcing the importance of bridging rigorous science with accessible public communication, and empowering the next generation of astro-innovators.
It was also a proud moment to see family participation, as both parent and child engaged together in representing BAC.
Perspective 2: Growth Through Exposure and Public Engagement
Another BAC volunteer represented the club alongside her mother and described the experience as remarkable and transformative.
Key highlights included:
- Listening to extraordinary scientists and professors
- Witnessing live experiments and demonstrations
- Exploring the beautiful campus and library
- Observing a variety of telescopes and instruments
Beyond scientific learning, the event became a powerful exercise in personal development. The experience enhanced skills in:
- Public communication
- Presenting in open, academic environments
- Handling diverse questions from different age groups
- Receiving and integrating feedback constructively
The exposure reinforced how vast the field of astrophysics truly is and how much there is still to explore.
BAC’s Commitment to Science Outreach
Participating in the IIA Open Day aligns perfectly with Bangalore Astronomy Club’s mission:
- To make astronomy accessible
- To promote scientific temperament
- To inspire young learners
- To bridge formal research institutions and public curiosity
- To nurture astro-entrepreneurship in India
We are proud that our volunteers not only represented BAC but also grew intellectually and personally through this platform.
Events like these strengthen the ecosystem between research institutions and outreach organizations, ensuring that astronomy remains not just an academic discipline, but a shared human experience.
Gratitude
We extend our sincere gratitude to the Indian Institute of Astrophysics for organizing such a well-structured and impactful Open Day.
We are equally proud of our volunteers who represented Bangalore Astronomy Club with enthusiasm, humility, and a strong spirit of learning.
Here’s to many more collaborations, deeper learning, and inspiring the next generation of sky-watchers and astro-innovators. 🌌
